Strengthening the organic production in the Finnish horticulture

Project: Research project

Project Details

Description (abstract)

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has given the target to increase the organic production in Finland. There is also an increasing market for organic vegetables and fruits among consumers and institutional kitchens. Despite this trend the organic cultivation of horticultural products is decreasing. There are problems in cultivation methods, profitability, marketing and logistics.

This project aims to solve the problems associated to cultivation techniques, like plant protection (e.g. weeds and diseases) and nutrient supply (green manures and catch crops). Cost-effectiveness of the new methods will also be assessed. At the end of the project, we will evaluate the future prospects of the Finnish organic horticulture.
