Description (abstract)
The project studies evolution of continental lithosphere and accretion of the Eurasian plate out of smaller pieces of continental lithosphere and island arcs. The Eurasian plate started to form 2 billion years ago at the Fennoscandian shield. The last additions were the Alps and Mediterranean island arcs. Seismic research is used to recognize old plate boundaries, sutures and extension basins and to study evolution of the lithosphere.
