Ilmajoki is a rural municipality of 12 000 inhabitants situated in the Southern Ostrobothnia. The parish of Ilmajoki was founded in 1516 and the actual municipality was established in 1867. The emergence of history of Ilmajoki can be traced back to the days of peasant rebel Jaakko Ilkka in the 16th century and it has been a target of critical academic survey since the beginning of the 20th century. The aim of the ongoing project which was launched in May 2015 is to conduct a historical research of the modern phases of Ilmajoki (1945–1994). The project will last until the end of the year 2017, when the manuscript will be finished.
