    Description (abstract)

Utopia (New Technology in Teaching and Pedagogically Innovative Thinking), aimed at promoting educational use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in teachers’ work in a number of school subjects at the primary, lower secondary and upper secondary school levels. It also aimed at promoting inter-school and inter-teacher networking prior to the Internet, by using the then modern integrated distributed learning environments and software applications. A key aim was also to contribute beneficially to the contents taught, studied and learnt at various school levels and in various school subjects. The project, linking a number of schools from Metropolitan Helsinki together, tried to implement the Virtual School concept in real life. It also profited from outside experts, such as the IT specialists from the University of Helsinki Computing Centre, who were engaged to help teachers in their work.
