Abstract
The article analyzes the attempts of professors Z. Castrén (1868-1938) & Urpo Harva (1910-1994) to establish a new discipline of adult education in the context of the occupational development of 20th century adult education. The co-evolution of semantics and structures is related to the theoretical view on professionalism, which helps understanding the limits and possibilities in discipline formation.
