Abstract

The new Estonian-Finnish online dictionary, Viro–suomi-sanakirja. Eesti-soome sõnaraamat, published in January 2019, has been compiled using the new corpus-based Estonian monolingual dictionary. This article examines how editing the dictionary is made easier due to it being based on the corpus-based monolingual dictionary, while also discussing how this editing process can result in some problems. Technology helps in compiling bilingual dictionaries, but do the advantages of using a monolingual dictionary as a basis for a bilingual one outweigh the resulting problems? As there are quite a few emerging issues, it is important that sufficient time and labour resources are given to projects of this sort.
