Abstract

Historical sociolinguistics is a multidisciplinary field investigating the relationship between the individual, language and society in the past. Corpus linguistics is widely used to address key questions in historical sociolinguistics, such as the role of social factors in language variation and change. Structured and representative electronic corpora provide access to language data of the past, and they can be effectively searched for and analyzed with corpus tools. Historical sociolinguistics has benefited from fast technological progress and participated in the development of sophisticated computational methods in corpus linguistics.
