Abstract

Colostrum is regarded as the sole external energy supplier for newborn piglets.
It plays a crucial role in providing nutrition and immunological protection to piglets.
Insufficient colostrum intake is a major cause of piglet mortality before weaning. Weaimed to investigate the effects of colostrum intake on the production performance and preweaning survival of piglets. We individually followed 109 piglets from 10 sows from their birth to their weaning at 28 days of age. We calculated the colostrum intake with a regression model widely used for sow-reared piglets. Then, we categorized the piglets based on their 24h colostrum intake (CI) in grams as 600.
We found significant differences among the four groups in terms of their production performance: body weight at birth (0h), vitality score, body weight at 24h, body weight gain at 24h, colostrum intake, body weight at weaning, and ADG at weaning. The higher the CI the higher were the production performance of piglets (P < 0.01). We did not observe significant differences in pre-weaning piglet diarrhea (P >0.05). Mortality caused by crushing was higher in piglet CI group of weaning.
