Abstract
This article formulates a basis for understanding a complex series of applied
ethnomusicologies that are diverse in conceptual and discursive approach to
research and practice. The article aims to contemplate how different political,
social and cultural values in applied ethnomusicology can inform the theorization
of method. I am interested in how such differences might translate into more
informed and effective scholarly communities for doing applied
ethnomusicological work. The notion of the epistemic community is proposed as
useful for coordinating applications, and for analyzing results including towards
future applications and enhanced understandings of music.
