First record of Culex modestus in Finland

Research output: Contribution to journalArticleScientificpeer-review

During the course of identifications of mosquitoes collected around Finland in summer 2022 an adult Culex male from the southwestern coast was of immediate interest due to its noticeable morphological differences from the recorded fauna. Upon examination, the genitalia keyed to Culex modestus, and subsequent sequences of the barcoding region of Cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) confirmed the identification. This is the first finding of Cx. modestus in Finland, and the northernmost record of the species in Europe. It becomes the 44th mosquito species recorded from the country.
