Abstract

This introduction reviews the history of Nordic pan-nationalism, from Scandinavianism to Nordic cooperation, in the broader context of contemporaneous European pan-national movements in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. It further engages with existing and recent scholarly discussions of pan-nationalism and its relation to nation-building and region-building, and outlines the “low political” and civil society dimension of pan-national movements. Moreover, it briefly presents the contributions and the main lines of investigation.
