Abstract

This article explores the poetics of Volter Kilpi (1874–1939). Kilpi is known as the Finnish modernist author who wrote a most extraordinary and original series of works collectively known as the “Archipelago cycle” (the first novel of the cycle has been recently translated into German with the title Im Saal von Alastalo). The article uses cognitive poetics (Terence Cave, Caroline Levine and Reuven Tsur) to elucidate Kilpi’s style focusing on the emotional effects of Kilpi’s innovative language and narrative strategies. It offers a new approach to the author and the study of modernist poetics.
