Abstract
Traditionally, interjections across languages are believed to constitute either interjectional sentences, or form interjectional clauses as a part of simple sentences. Characteristic feature of such constructions is their syntactic independence. In Russian onomatopoeic verbal interjections, nonetheless, behave differently. Analysis of the Russian National Corpus shows that constructions with them rarely act as inserted or introductory clauses and are not necessarily separated from the host construction by punctuation marks. The purpose of this article is 1) to challenge the statement about syntactic independence of Russian onomatopoeic verbal interjections; 2) to prove experimentally that they can be syntactically integrated and act as members of a sentence.
