Research output: Contribution to journalArticleScientificpeer-review

Abstract

The article revisits the development of Proto-Uralic close front *i in Proto-Permic. Two regular reflexes of *i have been posited in earlier literature: *i and *e. In a brief survey of pre-existing etymological research, a third reflex *ɨ is identified as also being relatively numerous. Typical phonological environments for the development *ɨ are further identified, and several open problems are shown to remain. Lastly some implications of the results for future research are suggested.
