Abstract
Modern information technologies are effecting a deep transformation in the service sector of society. The automatic teller machine (ATM) is one of the basic technologies expressing the current trends. The Finnish results reveal the role of the different bank strategies in the current-day increasingly deregulated and competitive banking industry. However, the rapid changes may make the ATM services lag behind the customers’ needs and the technical possibilities. This is stressed in an analysis of customer interviews and in an analysis of the “product semantics” of the ATMs.
