Abstract

In 2014 Finnish public news agency reported that government officials have initiated an investigation to examine the established state of multiple citizenship in Finland and its neighboring countries. Statements of officials to explain this initiative left room for speculations that this issue had become due to Russians. In early 2017, the topic caught again notable public attention after reports claimed discrimination in Finnish Defence Forces. In this article, I examine how Russian language internet discussions reacted to these news and discussed the implied Russian relation to the issue. These discussions manifested scale of reactions from approval to criticism of how the majority population or segments of it relates to Russian-speakers in Finland.
