Abstract

Michael Chekhov, the head of the Second MKHAT in 1924-28, believed in the spiritual function of the theatre, as did his teacher k.S. Stanislavsky, and in this vein he staged Hamlet and Peterburg (by A. Belyi). Chekhov also developed, taught and practiced his method of acting based on Stanislavsky and Rudolf Steiner's eurythmy. His ideas were not compatible with Soviet ideology, and he left Soviet Russia in 1928.
