In recent years, institutions of higher education have assumed increasingly active and visible roles in social engagement. Nonetheless, in discussions about the ways in which universities can effect positive change in the society, pedagogical activities have often been overlooked. To address this issue, my article presents service learning through music research as an effective catalyst for change. Although service learning is currently a small area of music studies, the existing literature shows its potential for providing positive learning experiences. As a contribution to this growing body of knowledge, I will explore my experiences as a graduate student in a music research project and demonstrate how service learning can provide students with an impactful and intellectually stimulating learning experience.
