Abstract

Theories of the state and how these have been utilized and developed in human geography and related fields are discussed. It is suggested that historical materialist and poststructuralist approaches to the state need to be taken seriously and combined. Both approaches are briefly sketched before focusing on selected aspects of the state which are of particular importance within geography. Some ideas as to how these two strands of state theory could be put to good use in the study of territorial and relational state spaces are discussed as well.
