Abstract

After moving from new York to Los Angeles, in 1943, the famous Russian emigre actor and teacher of acting Michael (Mikhai) Chekhov (1891 - 1955) continued teaching his acting methods, now to the Hollywood actors. Even if Chekhov did not found a permanent acting studio, as Lee Strasberg did in New York, he was teaching at his home (private classes) and at the Drama Society, where he gave group lessons and lectured. Based on memoirs, journal articles, and Chekhov's own books, the article gives an almost full accounts of this little known (in Russia) period of the Russian actor and his influence on American film actors, some of whom continued teaching his methods.
