Abstract

Abstract: After critically examining and juxtaposing a number of academic
explanations of the rise and development of ascetic and mystical
tendencies in Islam (known collectively as “Sufism”), the author shows
that neither of them can provide answers to a host of complex questions
that arise in the course of its study. At the same time, familiarity with
these explanations allows the investigator to create synthetic explanatory
models on the basis of the solutions proposed by his/her predecessors.
