Abstract

The two leading Russian actresses, Olga Knipper -Chekhova and Zinaida Raih, present two theatres and various styles and periods: the psychological realism at the Moscow Art Theatre and the the revolutionary Meyerhold Theatre which later turned towards psychologism. Knipper and Raih were fortunate to participate in moulding the images of modern women in the talented ensemble of actors and directed by outstanding directors. At the same time they experienced the ups and downs of the time-bound acting profession; in the case of Raih, with tragic consequences; in Knipper´s case - becoming a symbol of pre-revolutionary art.
