Crucibles are ceramic, quartz or metal containers resistant to high temperatures. In this study, we measured the effectiveness of pre-burning to remove residues and contaminants from the crucibles by studying the weight of the crucibles before and after preburning them. 
Two groups of crucibles were weighed and pre-burned in a furnace. The first group was burned at 550 °C for 30 minutes and the second group at 550 °C for 15 minutes. After pre-burning, the crucibles were cooled down to room temperature in a desiccator before weighing them again.

The crucibles in both groups lost weight during pre-burning. The first group lost more weight with an average of 0.76 mg compared to 0.46 mg of the second group (Table 1). The loss of weight reveals that pre-burning removes residues and contaminants from crucibles. In addition, the greater loss of weight on the crucibles in the first group suggests that after 15 minutes some residues still remain on the crucibles. We recommend that crucibles should be pre-burned at least 30 minutes to achieve higher accuracy on any weight measurements and to decrease the chances of unwanted substances on further laboratory analysis.
