Value Learning and Life Trajectories among Finnish Religious Education Professionals: Aims and Objectives versus Meaning and Purpose

Research output: Contribution to journalArticleScientificpeer-review

Abstract

This article contributes to the growing international literature on teachers’ professionalism, with particular reference to senior teachers and teacher educators in religious education in Finland. Acknowledging recent research literature on professionalism and religious education profession across Europe, the article makes an addition to these by consideration of professionalism in religious education as a subtle but sometimes conflictual negotiation of personal values which may be at odds with state-sanctioned curricula goals in the subject. We give particular focus to these professionals’ accounts on the negotiation of potential tensions between the personal and the professional values, as embedded in the societal setting.
