Verb extensions in Swahili language

Research output: Working paperScientific

Abstract

As all Bantu languages, Swahili has a complex structure of verb extensions. The
extended verbs provide various types of changes to the meaning of the base form. The
meaning of the extended verb can usually be derived from the combination of the base
verb and the extension clitics. Sometimes, however, the extended form has lexicalized
to such extent that the meaning is not derivable from its parts.
The purpose of this report is to carry out a quantitative survey of various types of
verb extensions in Helsinki Corpus of Swahili 2.0. The results of various sections of
the corpus will be compared.
