Abstract

Professor of Russian language, literature and history Yakov Grot was influential as the first full professor in his field at the Helsinki University in the 1840s; he translated Scandinavian and Finnish literature into Russian and contributed to the knowledge of Russian literature among Finns. After his return to St Petersburg Grot became a leading specialist in the research Russian literature and language.
