Training Course on GIS and GPS, Tanzania, Mweka village
As part of the CHIESA first annual conference in Moshi, Tanzania on April 2012, short courses were arranged for African researchers studying climate change. One of these was arranged by WP2 - an intensive “Introduction to GIS” –course, using open source software, Quantum GIS. Sixteen students, either CHIESA PhD students or researchers of CHIESA partner institutions, were introduced to the user-friendly open source geographic information system, which they used to process and analyze data. Through the 4-day course students were motivated to learn the fun-damentals of GIS so they can then apply their new skills to their research. In addition to the practicals in the computer lab, students also were engaged in fieldwork, learning the fundamentals of GPS data collection. The teachers were Dr. Mika Siljander and M.Sc. Pekka Hurskainen, assisted by Ms. Yelena Finegold from Clarke University, USA.
