English L2 Creative Writing Workshops and Language Culture

In L2 creative writing workshops in English, participants invest their emotions in L2 writing and develop their L2 identity (Graves 2018). Such workshops are naturally intercultural, and the teacher and participants often identify culture-specific underpinnings of writing principles and examples. However, the entire workshop method and the idea of craft as universal have been called into question as culturally loaded relics of Cold-War-era America (e.g., Bennett 2015). In this light, I explore how an L2 workshop can simultaneously (1) hold up English writing models as exemplars of a “language culture” and (2) encourage individual participants to develop a language identity that is more than a loose copy of those models.
