Experienced discrimination has shown to be associated with psychological adjustment: people who face discrimination often report higher levels of anxiety and depression. In psychological acculturation research it has been suggested, that ethnic identity may buffer from adverse effects of discrimination. However, less is known how children and adolescents, yet constructing their identities, cope with experiences of discrimination and othering. Furthermore, understanding the effects of discrimination in different immigirant-origin generations (i.e., first- and next generation) remains scarce. In this presentation the relation of experienced discrimination to anxiety and depression in different immigrant-origin adolescent generations is explored and possible protective factors discussed. Furthermore, I will argue how the Lazarus's and Folkman's model for coping with stress may be applied in studying the impact of discrimination and othering in children and adolescents. This application of the coping-stress model will also provide for pedagogical implications on how to support students in risk of discrimination to construct positive self-images and identities that promote pride in ones heritage and protects from adverse effects of discrimination and othering.
