This study investigates the role of morphosyntactic and phonological factors in how utterance-final lengthening operates in a mildly polysynthetic and mostly suffixing language: Paraguayan Guaraní. Using duration as the main correlate of final lengthening, it assesses the role of the position of the stressed syllable in utterance-final words, the status of the word-final syllable as a grammatical morpheme, and a host of other phonological variables in the phonetic expression of final lengthening in the language. Results suggest an interaction of morphosyntactic and phonological variables with the prosodic structure of the language, with stressed syllables showing more lengthening overall, as well as syllables expressing grammatical meaning.
