Media exposure on western consensual non–monogamy (CNM; Barker & Langdridge, 2010), i.e. practices in which individuals agree to engage in sexual and/or loving relationships with multiple partners, has been growing steadily in Finland. This study examines the ways in which polyamory, open relationships and swinging are made sense of in Finnish online media contexts in post #metoo years from 2017 to 2021. We use the reflexive thematic analysis (TA; Braun & Clarke, 2021) and analyze 80 online news reports from five different media platforms to build an understanding of the ways these relationship styles are represented and how these representations take part in supporting or challenging mononormativity (Pieper & Bauer, 2005), i.e., the dominant assumptions on the normality of monogamy. From a critical social psychological perspective (Bowleg, 2018), we seek to point out and challenge normative and self–evident ways of thinking and writing about relationships, which produce and maintain oppressive practices towards relationships that do not fit into the mononormative mold. Our preliminary results show how the discourses of CNM have evolved from marginalization towards representing it as a valid relationship option to some, while the underlying notion of mononormativity remains strong.| Aikajakso | 5 toukok. 2022 → 6 toukok. 2022 |
