In Nicolás Maduro’s Venezuela the government has tried to asphyxiate free media, and
thus, to maintain its communicational hegemony. However, there are some media actors that have challenged this and even contributed to creating counter-hegemonic
communication. This presentation is based on interviews with Venezuelan media
professionals, and analysis of media content gathered in 2017-2018. It suggests that the current hybrid media system challenges the government’s hegemony since
organizations, groups and individuals are able to blend new and old media logics, and
that strong professional identity, values and peer support play a part in overcoming
increasing external censorship and fear.
