KuvausFreshwater lakes and rivers in the northern hemisphere are subject to water brownification or water browning. This phenomenon consists of a change of water color towards a more yellow-brown color and is mainly linked to an increase in dissolved organic matter (DOM) from the land. The causes of water brownification and its consequences on biodiversity are still murky. Why and how to investigate them?
Clarisse Blanchet, PhD student in Wetland Ecology at the University of Helsinki, researches the effects of water brownification in freshwater ecosystems of the Evo area, in southern Finland.
The Evo forests are home to a network of lakes, streams and wetlands. These shelter a rich biodiversity, including the Smooth Newt. Being sensitive to environmental alterations, these discrete amphibians are good bioindicators of the health of the ecosystem they live in.
