Tutkimuksen ja opetuksen kuvaus

Berfin's doctoral research project investigates the interplay between externalization (mainly, the practices of deportation and containment) and the rights claims of migrants in irregular circumstances (i.e., asylum seekers and refugees) through focusing on the intersections of international refugee law, human rights, legal and political theory, and the EU asylum law and policy. In other words, it examines how externalization manages migrants’ access to state territory, asylum (procedures), and human rights, and how these migrants can access to these three stages of inclusion despite externalization.

The project, which is socio-legal in nature, contextualizes this question by developing a theoretical framework with insights from Hannah Arendt and other contemporary theorists, as well as perspectives from critical border studies, and by conducting empirical studies (qualitative content analysis and visual ethnography) in the context of Greek hotspots and Turkey.
