Research interests:

My overall research interest is to understand mechanisms of gene expression that regulate brain development and physiology. During my graduate and postdoctoral training and later as a group leader, I focused on the role of transcription factors and RNA-binding proteins in controlling neuron-specific transcriptome at the transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels and uncovered new functions for cerebral cortex development. Most recently in the laboratory of Professor Anu Suomalainen Wartiovaara at University of Helsinki, I investigate the communication between mitochondrial and nuclear genomes in the context of mitochondrial disease mouse models and focus on the role of mitochondrial genome maintenance by nuclear genes specifically in astrocyte functions. For my research, I use transgenic and knockout mouse models, and in vitro cultured primary neural cells, and use a wide range of techniques in cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, as well as high through-put sequencing and computational analyses. My long term goal is to attain a faculty position in research or teaching in a leading university.

Merits in teaching and pedagogical competence:

During 2009-2017, I was an Assistant Professor and co-founder of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Koç University, the leading education and research university in Turkey. Over a span of eight years, I gained extensive teaching experience, developing seven individual courses (four undergraduate and three graduate level) and teaching a total of 26 full semester courses. All courses were exclusively taught by myself, culminating in approximately 1000 hours of active teaching time. In addition, I developed undergraduate and graduate level curriculum for the Molecular Biology and Genetics Program, supervised undergraduate, Master’s and Ph.D. students. My courses provided a thorough basis for the subject matter, opportunity for in-class active learning and discussion and whenever suitable examples of primary research literature and critical thinking tasks. For three of these courses, I received the Distinguished Instructor Recognition from the University President and the Dean of College of Science. I have provided the teaching material and exams I have developed as attachments to my application.
