Michigan Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Division Intern: 2014

  • Mentored by current Michigan Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Division Chief about managing fisheries resources at the state government level and effectively communicating fisheries science to policy makers
  • Developed communication strategy to effectively present thesis research about the effects of climate change on brook trout to Michigan’s Natural Resource Commission (MNRC)
  • Presented research to MNRC in Munising, MI August 2014
  • Paved the way for future graduate students to present research to the MNRC

 

Student Participant of the Infish Global Research Project: 2012 – 2014

  • Contributed research to Infish Global research group; a cooperative international research venture between the United States Geological Survey, Michigan State University (USA), the University of Hull (United Kingdom), and Carlton University (Canada)
  • Designed factsheets to publicize and provide information about the group
  • Assisted in preparing annual progress reports detailing the group’s activities to the US Geological Survey

  • Edit manuscripts for English grammar, punctuation, and style for Russian colleagues at the I. D. Papanin Institute for Biology of Inland Waters of Russian Academy of Sciences in Borok, Russia

Michigan State University Fly Gals Coordinator: 2012 - 2013

  • Planned annual retreat and instructional event designed to introduce female natural resource professionals to the sport of fly fishing and encourage the development of a professional network between event participants

Pure Fishing Conservation Leaders Advisory Team (CLAT) Intern: 2012 – 2014

  • Participated in discussion of fisheries conservation related issues, defining their relevance to the fishing tackle industry, producing problem solving strategies, and conflict resolution

  • Attended assessment cruise conducted by I.D. Papanin Institute for the Biology of Inland Waters
  • of the Russian Academy of Sciences
  • Assisted in fish stock assessment and research concerning various aspects of the Volga River’s ecology
  • Participated in discussions concerning Russian fisheries policy as compared to that of the Great Lakes basin

Demmer Scholars Washington DC Program Participant/Trout Unlimited National Headquarters Government Affairs Intern: 2011

  • Assisted with government affairs work and policy research related to current freshwater fisheries issues
  • Developed skills in analyzing natural resource policy and understanding the political framework related to governing natural resources
  • Participated in Washington D.C. internship program in conjunction with a Michigan State University summer class taught by Mark Rey, related to environmental advocacy and government’s role in creating natural resource related policy

Trout Unlimited, Michigan Intern: 2011

  • Researched the history and current state of ballast water management policy in the Great Lakes
  • Developed educational presentations to inform Trout Unlimited employees and members of the current state of ballast water management and policy

Undergraduate Laboratory Assistant: 2010 – 2011

  • Worked with a MSU zoology department laboratory exploring the evolution of courtship and mating behavior differences between different morphs of three-spine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) fish
  • Assisted with fish husbandry and data collection

 

Summer Internship at Hull University International Fisheries Institute: 2010

  • Assisted in field research for sustainable fisheries and river system health including adult and juvenile fish surveys, fish diet analysis, monitoring habitat conditions, and radio tracking specimens to determine species migration patterns 
  • Developed research skills including species identification, stomach content analysis, data entry, electrofishing, near shore seine netting, fish measurement, and scale collection
