Tutkimuksen ja opetuksen kuvaus

Dr Pasi Sihvonen is Director of Zoology Unit in the Finnish Museum of Natural History. He advocates digitisation measures and techniques to provide open access to collections and related metadata. His research focuses on the taxonomy and phylogeny of the geometrid moths, a cosmopolitan group of Lepidoptera containing ca. 25 000 species. His research is characterised by large-scale international projects that have a global view, and they often combine molecular and morphological data. He is one of the authors of landmark monograph series Geometrid Moths of Europe

During 2005-2017 Sihvonen worked in non-academic positions, including director, head of unit and expert positions, and lead several development projects in the field of change management, digital service development, service design, the largest of those having over 30 participants from public and private sector. His expertise covers research funding, research funding politics and peer-review in international context.

Sihvonen teaches insect diversity (undergraduate course for biology students) at the University of Helsinki.
