Prof. Karmela Liebkind received the ETMU Award of the Finnish Society for the Study of Ethnic Relations and International Migration 27.10.2006 for extensive
contribution to research in this area.

Excerpts of motivation for the ETMU Award (for the full text in
Finnish, see http://www.etmu.fi/fin/liebkind.html ):
"Karmela Liebkind is one of the first Finnish researchers who
introduced questions related to cultural and linguistic minorities
into broader social scientific scrutiny as well as into public
discourse in society. ... In addition to questions related to cultural
and linguistic minorities, the research interests of Karmela Liebkind
encompass intergroup relations more generally, ethnic identity,
racism and the process of acculturation. She is a significant scholar
not only on a national but also on an international level. ...
Karmela Liebkind has also actively undertaken international research
projects. She has headed and participated in several international
multidisciplinary projects, thus contributing to giving Finnish
research in this area a prominent role and giving other researchers
the possibility to participate in demanding international comparative
projects. ... Karmela Liebkind is also known as an important opinion
leader in the society. She finds it necessary to participate actively
in fostering good ethnic relations also in practice. Karmela
Liebkindin has been rewarded before for her merits. In 2001 she
received the Maikki Friberg Equality Award for the work she has done
to foster equality, multiculturalism and tolerance at the University
of Helsinki".
