These workshops will examine diverse threats to regional and global cultural heritage in a complicated, Nordic and international legal landscape, which encompasses national borders, the EU’s Schengen Area borders, a ‘hard border’ between the EU and the Russian Federation, and Nordic cross-border cooperations.

The workshops will also address best practice in methods for conducting academic and non-academic research on cultural objects (e.g. their content, composition, origins, excavation context, etc.) and how to share that research with the public.

Participants will share the state-of-the-art of research into illicit trafficking of a wide variety of cultural heritage objects, from artefacts, to texts, to human remains, as well as how social media has changed supply and demand both in the Nordic region and globally, and what new approaches are needed to identify and police trafficking.

The workshops will also bridge the gap between academic and non-academic stakeholders in the Nordic region and beyond, and place the Nordic situation on the world stage. Bringing together international scholars, Nordic senior and junior scholars, representatives of museums, government agencies and journalists, the networks that are formed will create possibilities for multidisciplinary cooperation and encourage innovation.
