Connecting the Plots is a collaborative transdisciplinary research project between the Helsinki Institute of Urban and Regional Studies (Urbaria) and the City of Vantaa investigating the potnetial of urban allotment gardens (UAGs) to improve the community vitality and social cohesion of Finnish suburbs.
With food production as a lingua franca, our aim is to investigate if UAGs can be used more effectively to not only influence social relations between suburban dwellers but as a long-term strategy for regional segregation prevention in suburban neighbourhoods and activation of urban green spaces.
The project will focus on suburbs within the City of Vantaa, the most ethnically diverse, fastest growing, and highly under-studied city in Finland, with significant potential to expand green infrastructure in suburban neighbourhoods.
In collaboration with environmental planners, multi-cultural affairs officers, and local resident participation, quantitative and qualitative data will be used to co-create, test and evaluate interventions related to community engagement, garden design and management.
The project is funded by the Suburban Programme (Lähiöohjelma), an initiative of the Finnish government to improve vitality and social cohesion in Finnish suburbs. It will run from September 2020 until December 2022.
