Ekosysteemipalveluja kaupunkeihin - viherkattojen toiminta

We study the functioning of green roofs and the ecosystem services that they provide. We explore the properties that enable 1) an active soil animal community, 2) efficient cycling of nutrients and carbon, 3) plant growth and 4) the management of stormwater in Finnish climate. The use of recycled materials in establishing ecological, sustainable green roof ecosystems is an essential aim of our project. The obtained results can be applied in order to understand the functioning of other constructed urban green infrastructure as well. We also inform urban planners, authorities, end-users and other public about multifunctional, (cost-)effective and sustainable green roof solutions obtained in the Fifth Dimension – Vegetated roofs and Walls in Urban Areas -reseach programme (www.helsinki.fi/fifth-dimension).
