Finnish willow species (Salix spp.) as sources of novel antimicrobial extracts and compounds

Projekti: Tutkimusprojekti

Projektin yksityiskohdat

Kuvaus (abstrakti)

Willow (Salix L.) species are rich in secondary compounds that have not been explored thoroughly for their antibacterial and antifungal potential. Our project investigates at least eleven Salix species with common occurrence in Finland for their potential as sources of new antibacterial and antifungal compounds. In addition, the project will study, whether Salix spp. could contain compounds with antibiotic adjuvant effects. Although willow species are well known for their salicylates, the phenolic glucosides, less is known about their antimicrobial potential. Moreover, for example triterpenoids in willow species have not been studied enough for their antimicrobial effects. Thus, our project will also study the antimicrobial potential of willow triterpenoids. Plant collections have been made in Helsinki and Lammi areas of Finland in February-April 2022. Collections will be done during winter, spring, summer and autumn to assess the influence of season on the secondary compounds quality and quantity.
