In this multidisciplinary project we evaluate birch wood from a biorefineary perspective. We have identified bark as an important (understudied) tissue for various biochemical pathways. We have a special emphasis on betulin, xylan and lignin biosynthesis. We have determined that betulin synthesis has a large impact on the bark color. We have also determined the transcriptome for bark tissues. Surprisingly, there appear to be more than 500 genes quite abundant for bark. This includes many regulatory genes.
