Neuropsychiatric disorders are leading causes of years lived with disability. Their complex aetiology and genetic heterogeneity pose challenges for the development of effective research and treatment strategies. The progress of human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC) technology and patient-specific hiPSCs that carry disease-specific information offer invaluable cell-based models for studies of neuropsychiatric disorders and neuropsychopharmacology.
The iNeuroPsych cluster addresses the strong potential of innovative hiPSC research and covers a cooperative network of internationally-recognized researchers and clinicians exploiting hiPSC models for neuropsychiatric disorders and neuropsychopharmacology. The cluster includes ‘Nodes’ comprising 19 members representing expertise in the field in 11 European countries: Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, The Netherlands, and UK). The objectives of iNeuroPsych are: i) Establish a platform to support interactions of researchers working with hiPSCs, ii) Activate connectivity for sharing knowledge, resources, and ideas, iii) Maximize research output by enhancing data and standardization of quality by control procedures, iv) Optimize the use of research infrastructures/data sources and develop novel structures to overcome current challenges, v) Accelerate clinical translation of research findings, vi) Promote hiPSC research in neuropsychopharmacology by joint funding, and vii) increase the visibility of neuropsychiatric disorder research and neuropsychopharmacology.
