NatureGate R&D Program was founded by Prof. Mauri Ahlberg, Producer Eija Lehmuskallio and Nature Photographer Jouko Lehmuskallio in February 28, 2006. The aim of NatureGate R&D Program is by R&D to promote sustainable use of biodiversity and species identification as its necessary requirement. NatureGate online service is researched on as such and as part of larger learning environments. From the beginning both digital mapping of species distribution using GIS and cumulative collaborative knowledge building has been planned to become parts of NatureGate. Especially designed learning and teaching materials, simulations and educational serious games will be attached to NatureGate. From 2009 there has been NatureGate online magazine in Finnish. In 2010 Marja Ahlberg (Åhlberg) was added as a research assistant. She is helping mainly in the R&D work of Prof. Mauri Ahlberg (Åhlberg).
