Nordic Cooperation Revisited

Projektin yksityiskohdat

The networks aims to prove 1) that it is a major inaccuracy to look upon the history of the Nordic co-operation as a series of failures, that one should instead be sensitive to the ways in which Nordic co-operation has been successful; 2) that the way the co-operation has been successful is at the same time unique in an international comparison; and 3) that the way it is unique has to do with the kind of practices the Nordic co-operation has generated. These should be acknowledged as good practices which have relevance also for regional cooperation in other parts of the world. In order to achieve this goal, the network will analyse:
- the rhythm of Nordic co-operation, periodising the history of co-operation according to which sections of society have been particularly dynamic collaborators and which sections have expressed resistance to the very idea of Nordic co-operation.
- different types of transnational co-operation in a comparative perspective.what the impact is of joint Nordic action in international arenas.
the role of transnational Nordic co-operation among alternative schemes and organisations for transnational cooperation.

In terms of academic positioning, the research and the networks research training aims at showing that research on Nordic co-operation will remain topical as a crucial field of critical knowledge production. The research on regional collaboration and transnational practices is a future-oriented undertaking with potential to recruit doctoral students within and from outside the Nordic countries. On the basis of a thorough and innovative investigation of the near past the network will establish a basis for a discussion of the future. The network has thus the ambition to establish a strong platform for attraction for young researchers, to attract international collaborators with interest in Norden and to place the Nordic cooperation within a larger European as well as global discussion on regional cooperation.
