This document presents problems facing UNIX computer work with the Komi-Zyrian language and the development of a finite-state transducer for its morphophonological description. It discusses the substitution of Latin letters and compounds for Cyrillic letters, some not even supported by the standard Russian Cyrillic alphabet, and it also addresses the need for finite-state description of the Komi-Zyrian language. Then it delves into the morphological challenges of the description stemming from both actual stem morphology and orthographic traditions. Finally, a sample of finite-state transducer rules are provided utilizing Cyrillics and the two-level morphology program described by Prof. Kimmo Koskenniemi. Statistics are provided with examples of output.
