Aristotelian (or neo-Aristotelian) metaphysics is currently undergoing something of a renaissance. This volume brings together 14 new essays from leading philosophers working in or at least sympathetic to this conception of metaphysics, which takes its cue from the idea that metaphysics is the first philosophy. Many themes familiar from Aristotle’s metaphysics will be discussed, but the primary input from Aristotle is methodological: the methodological picture that emerges is opposed to the type of ontological deflationism that has recently gained a strong foothold in analytic metaphysics. In addition to the foundations and methodology of metaphysics, topics that are discussed include ontological categories, the role and interpretation of the existential quantifier, essence, substance, natural kinds, powers, potential, and the development of life.
