Abstrakti

Fantasma takes the reader on European railways, which often lead to Rome. The numbness of long train journeys, the visions springing from the boredom and the landscapes opening from the windows are intertwined with the descriptions of non-human beings, plants and animals in ancient and medieval texts. The subjects of examination are, for example, history of botanical gardens, natural philosophy of the medieval mystic Hildegard Bingeniläinen, animal themes in the essays of the French author Hélène Cixous, the frescoes of ancient ruins and the magician Kirke in Greek mythology. Observations are tinged by the uncertainty of knowledge and knowing, the journey is motivated by the desire towards the inexplicable.
