The magnetic counterpart of mismatch negativity (MMNm), a neurophysiological index of automatic sound-change discrimination in the auditory cortex, was measured in musicians and nonmusicians with 306-channel magnetoencephalography (MEG) in response to major, dissonant, minor, and mistuned triads. Musicians showed stronger MMNm than nonmusicians to all the chords, but this difference was more pronounced to the dissonant and mistuned chords. No significant group difference in the MMNm strength was found for the minor chords. Musical expertise thus seems to specifically affect the cortical automatic discrimination of dissonant and mistuned chords but not the more
common minor chord.
